Universal England Players’ Playlist
Ahead of the World Cup in Brazil, the players collaborated with Universal Music to create ‘The England Players’ Playlist: The Road To Brazil’. Released in June 2014 as a single CD and download, the playlist featured 18 tracks chosen by members of the World Cup squad, including number one hits from Avicii, John Newman and Sam Smith.
To launch the album the players featured in a specially commissioned 90-minute TV programme, which aired on MTV on 1st June 2014. The players took this opportunity to discuss why they had chosen the tracks they would be listening to during the tournament in Brazil.
“The players use music in a number of ways. Some of it might be motivational to get them into the zone, or whilst they’re travelling to and from matches. Either way music is an important part of their match preparation and this was a credible way for them to talk about it.”
Brian Rose, Managing Director of the Universal Commercial Division
“Music is an important part of my life. There are always songs that remind you of when you went away as a team or a track that comes on and just inspires you. It’s a big part of what we do”.
Daniel Sturridge, England and Liverpool FC
Profits from the album went to the England Footballers Foundation, to help support the players chosen charity partners.
Marks and Spencer Socks

Designed by Marks and Spencer, the official tailor to the England Team, and chosen by the players, the socks were available throughout the UK M&S stores as well as online as part of the M&S Autograph range.
“The team and I are immensely proud of the England Footballers Foundation and it continues to go from strength-to-strength. We look forward to seeing fans wearing their socks with pride to help support the England Footballers Foundation and the amazing work of our charity partners.”
